The store’s unique name, Tramps, takes inspiration from one of London’s most renowned private clubs. In 1969, Tramp opened its doors on Jermyn Street in central London, quickly becoming one of the world’s most exclusive members-only clubs. It attracted an elite clientele that included legendary musicians such as Frank Sinatra and the Beatles, along with Hollywood stars, socialites, and royalty from across the globe. Known for its discretion, Tramp allowed its members to revel in privacy, far from the public eye.

During the same era, Wollongong local Michael Corban, a prominent businessman, envisioned creating a store that embodied this same level of sophistication and exclusivity, but for men’s fashion. He was drawn to the name Tramp as it symbolized style, class, and an air of distinction—qualities that he wanted his store to reflect. With that inspiration, Tramps the Store was born in August 1973, setting a new standard for men’s fashion in the region.
