What does semi formal mean for men?
A suit: a well-fitted two-piece in navy, charcoal or mid-grey, a pressed collared shirt, polished leather shoes and usually a tie. A lounge suit on an invitation means the same thing.
Smart casual drops the tie, and usually the full suit. Black tie means a dinner suit.

What does semi formal dress code mean?
A suit. A business-weight two-piece, a pressed collared shirt, usually a tie, and polished leather shoes. Fit matters more than price.

Semi formal by day and by night
The dress code stays the same; the shades change. Go lighter before about 4pm and darker after.

What is a lounge suit?
A regular two-piece business suit: a matching jacket and trousers. It’s the British and Australian name for what semi formal asks for, and it isn’t a dinner suit.

Getting the fit right
A well-fitted mid-priced suit beats an expensive one that doesn’t fit. Check these four things in the mirror.
- The shoulders Sit clean, with no dent or overhang.
- The length The jacket covers your seat.
- The sleeves About a centimetre of shirt cuff showing.
- The trousers They fall onto the shoe with little or no break.

What should I wear if the invitation doesn’t say?
A navy suit and tie. It’s easier to take a tie off than to find one.
